Fan game Review: The Joy of Creation
The Joy Of Creation Reborn Download
This post's only purpose is to discuss a fan game. This post is not an attempt to gain upvotes, or start anything. It is only meant as I said before, as a way to discuss a fan game, and to see people's views on the fan game. There will be a set of rules I'll be following during this series. I will never judge a fan game based solely on who worked on it or created it. This would be very immature of me to do. I will not review fan games that have been cancelled. Only fan games that have been released to the public will be reviewed. Depending on what fan game I review, I will judge it differently due to how not all fan games follow the same genre. Although there will be a few times I'll mention how a fan game affected my life, I will not use it as a way to review any fan games. Meaning, I won't say another fan game is better just because of how it affected me. That would not be fair in the slightest to other fan games. Please, do not act like a child because of what I say in this post. Every person has a different opinion on different topics and you should respect that, as I shall for your opinions. I hope that this post can spark discussions about the fan game again, along with getting new people to play the fan game if they have not previously played it. I also hope this post will allow people to see the fan game in a new light, and see why someone might like or dislike the fan game. There will be spoilers for the fan game in this post. If you do not want the fan game spoiled, skip to the end of the post where a brief summary of the review will be located.
Hello everyone! You might know me as the guy who created that one low quality cringe series, or I might just be a complete stranger. As you can already tell from the title of this post, the first part of many in this series will be tackling The Joy of Creation! Now, notice how it just says The Joy of Creation, not The Joy of Creation: Story Mode. Yeah, that wasn't a mistake. I'm not just going to be covering Story Mode, I'm covering all of TJoC. That includes the original, Reborn, Halloween Edition, and of course Story Mode. I thought what better way to start this series than with by far the most popular fan game. I know that the original version of The Joy of Creation was never truly finished, but I don't see it as a cancelled game. I see it as a test of sorts to see what Nikson could do. The game was rebooted and is very different from the other games, so I still see it as its own game. I also consider Reborn and Story Mode to be their own games as well. I'll be covering each one individually, giving my thoughts on them. At the end of the post, I'll give a basic summary of my opinion on them all since this will be a long review. Now then, let's start with the original version of The Joy of Creation.
The Joy of Creation released all the way back in 2015. It's a very simple game that was created in a short time period. You're in a room, defending yourself against the threats known as the Ignited. You can rotate in a complete 360 circle in your chair. You can not move or walk around the room. There was no real task in the game. Your only goal was to survive for as long as you could. The game had a very basic story to it. You played as a man who seems to work for Freddy's. His name just so happens to be Scott. Scott was tasked with taking the Withered home for repairs, while the Toys are located elsewhere. And because the Withered are haunted, they're coming to kill you. It's a story that anyone could come up with in only a few minutes, probably less. The original version though wasn't focusing on the story, it was focusing on game play. However, the game play was also very basic. To deal with all the threats you simply had to shine your light at them. Audio cues would let you know if they were near or not. Basically, it was the game Boogeyman but FNaF. So, what do I think of this version? It is a very basic fan game, with not much excitement going on in it. I'll admit though, the jump scares were well done. The actions that the Ignited did during their jump scare was pretty much nothing, but the jump scares execution was splendid. The jump scare happened instantly and you had no clue when it would happen. I was cut completely off guard a good amount of times when playing the game. And in all honesty, I don't see many jump scares like that anymore. People seem to focus a bit more on the actions the threat is doing. If more people made the jump scare sudden and out of nowhere like in TJoC, more fan games would make you be on edge. Scott managed to do that with Bonnie and Chica in FNaF 1 pretty well. The small environment you're located in the game doesn't have much going on in it. There isn't a whole lot of props that make it jump out, it's all rather bland. There's two closets inside the room, a door, and a window behind you. There is also your desk, of course. I never felt scared or freaked out while playing it, I only did when a jump scare happened. A terrifying atmosphere is what this game lacks greatly. The game in general is pretty straight forward and it takes no time at all to understand what you have to do. Though after a short awhile, it becomes very boring and repetitive. Just turning around in a circle, shining your light at the Ignited. It's all very dull after a half hour or so. Then there's the Ignited them self. Now considering the game was made in 2015, very accurate models of the Withered did not exist yet. While Everything Animations did do a good job on making the Withereds used in TJoC, they aren't that accurate. They seem to still have the same texture models EA gave them, with nothing changed except for them maybe being a bit more dirty. They have certain parts of them missing, making them look more damaged. It's a method of damaging that most people could do if they had the tools. There isn't anything grand about it. Course as you all know, the models used in the original are in fact used for Reborn and Story Mode. I'll be talking about them again soon enough. All in all, the original version of The Joy of Creation is very simple, and nothing spectacular. Although at the time it was made, people probably did think it was a good game. And considering the short time period Nikson took to make it, it was a well made game that managed to distract yourself for a bit. It's not an amazing game, but it definitely isn't below average. I'd only recommend you play it if you want a trip down memory lane, or want something simple to do in an attempt to waste time. Now onto The Joy of Creation: Reborn.
The Joy of Creation: Reborn came into existence in 2016, only around a year after the original game. The game was only made because of a poll Nikson made asking his fans if he should revive the game. It was because of that poll, that the hit fan game we all know exists. TJoC: R is a huge improvement from the original version. Reborn contains 100% free roam in it, along with tasks for you to do. Unlike every other version of TJoC, Reborn had no story in it. It was simply a free roam game where you did different tasks while avoiding the Ignited. I'm only going to talk about the final version of Reborn, since that is the complete version. There are four different levels you can choose from in the game. The First Floor, the Basement, the Attic, and the Forest. Each level contains a single Ignited you must face against, while doing a task. Each task is the same one, you have to collect a certain amount of items before time runs out. At first it might seem easy enough to do, but it actually is quite a challenge. You don't get much time to do the task, meaning you'll have to be on a constant look out for items. The locations of the items, except for the Forest, also change. This means the items won't be in the same spot each time. It can take quite awhile to complete each challenge. Each Ignited also act differently. While Ignited Freddy and Bonnie seem to act the same, they do have one difference. Freddy does not know where you are the entire time, he only knows where you are when he encounters you. Bonnie though, will always be aware of where you are. While doing the same task in each level is disappointing, they are quite fun. Reborn is basically an improved version of the original TJoC, only now there's free roam. After awhile it does get boring, doing the same thing so frequently. But the way each Ignited acts is rather unique. Ignited Freddy simply patrols the entire level he is in. He only ever comes for you when he makes eye contact with you. Meaning you could probably complete the challenge without encountering him. He acts as a tutorial type part, for people to get a feel of the game. I personally really like this. They aren't to easy, but also aren't extremely hard. Ignited Bonnie always knows where you are. Once he begins zoning in on you, you're screwed. And because of the Basement layout, it's difficult to actually get away from him while getting all the items. Ignited Foxy's and Ignited Chica's mechanics are very different compared to Freddy's and Bonnie's. Ignited Foxy is similar to Ignited Bonnie. He always knows where you are, and will follow you around. However, he doesn't attack you right away. Only when his eyes light up does he attack. To avoid death, you have to shine your light at him. This will stun him for a few seconds, giving you time to escape. Shining the light at him when his eyes aren't lit, will lead to instant death. Ignited Chica also acts like Bonnie. She always knows where you are, following you from a distance. Over time she will gradually get closer. The only way to stop her from killing you is to look at her. She will be frozen in place whenever you look at her. But you can not look at her forever. If you look at her to long, she'll kill you instantly. Reborn makes up for the same repetitive task in each level by having the Ignited act differently. Not a single one acts the same as the others, they are all different in their own way. Like I have already stated in the beginning, Reborn is a highly improved version of the original. With more things to do, it'll take much longer for you to get bored of it. There's even a reward for doing all the challenges. You get the ability to see the Ignited entirely, without having to fear them killing you. Despite all of the improvements and the game being much more fun than the original, there are still a few flaws in it. A few of the layouts in it are bland, just like in the original. Mainly the First Floor and Basement. There are indeed props located throughout these levels. Though I feel like more stuff could have been added. The game is basically a free roam test of sorts, so it makes sense why there wouldn't be that much. Would have made the experience better though if the environments had more to them. Just like the original version, there isn't a unsettling or creepy atmosphere in the game, which makes the entire experience less scary. Although, the Forest level is a bit eerie during your first time playing it. Speaking of the Forest level. Chica's level is very similar to Slender man. You're collecting pages in a forest, and an entity is chasing after you. The only difference from the two is there's more pages for Chica, and you have to look at her. While a setting in a forest is nice, I didn't like how similar it was to Slender man. The overall task of collecting objects I found to be something thrown together quickly. It is much more fun actually running around the levels, seeing how long you can survive in them. The jump scares have also changed. In the original they cut straight to the scare. They barely took the time to do any type of action. While the jump scares don't play out for very long, that sudden jump you'd get from the original isn't here anymore. The only jump scare that really resembles the original's is Ignited Chica's and Freddy's. It's a shame really. A few of their jump scares are neat to look at, like Ignited Bonnies. The jump scares don't really cause you to jump backwards after you play for an hour non stop. I do like the animations the Ignited have though. The way they move is quite unsettling. Moving on from the actual levels, there's a secret in the Extras. If you click on a light switch, you cause a door to appear. Everything that you encounter inside of the door, along with the odd creatures have no importance to Story Mode. If I remember correctly, it has no real importance. It was simply something Nikson put in because he could. I don't have that much of a problem with it. It's just a small thing added in the game for the heck of it. Though the text once the game closed out at the end, I disliked. It seemed like it was important, but it wasn't. It was kind of a let down in all honesty. It of course isn't a big deal at all. It just doesn't seem right to add that in and make it seem important when it really isn't. Finally, The Ignited. The Ignited are still the same as in the original. Only difference now is they have eyes, and a new texture on them. Again, very basic method of making them look damaged. Nothing amazing about them. Overall, The Joy of Creation: Reborn gives you a very good time in decently made levels. Definitely play it if you want to experience some panic induced moments, along with good game play. But mainly you should play it if you want to spy on an AI. With that long wall of text done, we're moving on to Halloween!

The Joy of Creation: Halloween Edition was created in 2016 for Halloween, obviously. This game was also created in a short amount of time. This game does have a story, though it's pretty simple just like the original TJoC. You play as a man in Fazbear's Fright. You're tasked with burning it to the ground, to try and kill Ignited Springtrap. This game's story might be more simple than the original's. The layout of the building is not the same as Fazbear's Fright. There is more rooms in it so you can actually get away from Ignited Springtrap. The game play is also the same as Reborn's. You go around collecting items throughout the place, while avoiding Ignited Springtrap. To deal with them, you simply use your phone to play audio. You can also view different cameras to keep track of Ignited Springtrap. The game ends with you burning the place down, but also dying in the process. Personally, I think this game is the worst one out of all of the TJoC games. I dislike it more than the original which got boring fairly quickly. As far as I know, Nikson had more time to make this game than he did for the original. I think he had a month, maybe less to do it. I'll start off with what I like about this game, followed by what I dislike. I liked the layout of the place, with all of the stuff located in it. The layout was a big step up from the previous ones in the games. I also enjoyed the ending of the game. Having the character be consumed by the fire with Ignited Springtrap, I just like the idea of the hero dying with the villain I suppose. The story itself is good for a game made in a short time. The game play is also nice, though wasn't something I liked that much. It was just the same mechanic in FNaF 3, but free roam. Another mechanic of some kind would have been nice. That's about all the things I liked about this game. Let's start with probably the biggest thing for this game, the graphics. TJoC and TJoC: R had pretty nice graphics. TJoC: HE and especially TJoC: SM improved on the graphics greatly. You might think I'm going to say how the graphics sucked or something along those lines. I'm not. They don't suck at all. Nikson did a good job with the graphics. My computer was unable to handle HE, forcing me to install the Lite version. Though that's my computer's fault for being trash. Now here's the thing about me though, I don't care at all about graphics. I really don't. The thing I care the most about a game is good game play, well made environments, and a good story if the game has a story. You could give me a game that was made in a terrible engine making it have bad graphics, and if it had all the things I mentioned, I'd play it. I'd probably beat it. Basically, I'm not going to use graphics to decide if a fan game is good or not. Because there are games out there with not that good graphics, but everything else is amazing. It might seem like a stupid thing for all of you since graphics is what makes a game look good, and that's fine. I just won't be using it as a way to review fan games. Just like with the original TJoC and Reborn, the atmosphere isn't that good. It doesn't send off any bad vibes, or make me feel scared. It just feels like an empty building that's been gathering dust. The closest thing in the game that got any reaction out of me was probably when Ignited Springtrap started chasing me. After awhile though, it no longer had an effect on me. I might as well talk about them now. Ignited Springtrap, where to begin. They suck. That's a good way to begin I suppose. Don't get me wrong, they are kind of cool. Especially the noises they make. They also have a nice walking and running animation too. That got me a few times, making me feel uncomfortable. But then there's how they look. Hopefully by now you've all noticed my overall opinion of the Ignited. I don't like them, design wise anyway. And Ignited Springtrap is probably the worst of them all. Unlike all the other Ignited, Ignited Springtrap is missing no body parts at all. He's one complete set. And yes, Ignited Bonnie and Foxy are missing parts. Ignited Bonnie is missing part of their ear, and Ignited Foxy is missing one of their ears completely. I'm counting that as missing parts. The only thing missing on Ignited Springtrap is suit pieces. His jaw technically counts as a suit piece too. He's barely missing anything on his body. With the other Ignited at least they had a hefty amount missing from them. Creating an Ignited version of an animatronic isn't all that difficult when you think about it. TJoC: HE isn't that good of a game. Just imagine FNaF 3 but free roam, a single task needing to be done, no Phantoms, and a bigger map layout. That's about what HE is. Don't get me wrong, Nikson did a good job with making the game. It's just not that great though. For a game made for Halloween, it isn't very frightful. I don't recommend you play this game, unless you're really bored. Reborn is much better than HE is, and Reborn would be easier to handle on your computer. Now it's time for the main attraction.

TJoC: SM, oh boy. Hard to imagine it's been over a year since it released. I'm not going to wait until like, half way through to tell you what I think about it. I'll just tell you right now. I love it. It's such an amazing fan game. I know it's what pretty much everyone says, but it's true. Every single level is completely different. You have new mechanics in each level you need to learn to survive. Nikson did such an amazing job with the game. Everyone who helped make the game did an outstanding job on the game. The story of the game is once again not that hard to figure out, kind of. The game takes place in our world. Well, it's really an alternate reality of our world. The story revolves around Scott Cawthon and his family. It's the anniversary of FNaF, most likely the second one if I had to guess. Suddenly the animatronics from FNaF are real, and hunt down Scott's family. Scott's family is forced to survive the never ending night against them, while also looking for each other. It ends with Scott dying by the hands of the man they took in during the storm. Said man takes Scott's position in his family. Most people, especially Youtubers think this is what the story is. And well, they aren't wrong. That is what the story is, but there is more to it. The animatronics hunting down Scott and his family are actually demons. Demons that came from some hellish world of some kind. Michael, the man Scott takes in is also a demon. Michael along with the others manage to escape their hell world, and into ours. However, they don't arrive unharmed. Their bodies become damaged and fall apart. They're barely able to keep themselves whole. In order to be able to function again, they need Scott. That's pretty much the story, at least what I think it is. I could be wrong, but I'm positive it's something like this. Compared to pretty much every other fan game out there, this story is very original. I don't think there's another fan game with a story like SM. The entire idea of it being in our world is really cool. Although, the idea of demons consuming people's creations and stuff like that I don't really like, if that is what the demons do. I think something better could have been made for the story. Though I'm surprised other people hadn't done this idea before Nikson, or followed after Nikson. Sure, they'd be doing what he did. But it would still be awesome to see what other people's take on this idea are. Like I already mentioned, this game has really high quality graphics. You'll need a pretty good computer to play this game unfortunately. And like I also already mentioned, I don't care about graphics. So I'm not going to talk about them anymore. I'll talk about game play instead now. In total, there are five levels. The Bedroom, the Living Room, the Office, the Basement, and the Attic. The Basement actually takes place before all the other levels does story wise. It's all about Michael and the other demons trying to get into the real world. It would be hard to realize that if you weren't looking carefully. Again, each level has completely different game play. Two of the levels you're stuck in one spot, unable to walk around. In another two you can only move in a small area. And in one of them it's all free roam. With such different game play you're basically playing five different games all combined into one. And that's fricking awesome! All of the game play in the game is superb, far better than any of the previous games. The voice acting in the game was really well done. Same goes for all the animations in it, excellent work. And for once in these games, the atmosphere was great! My first and second time playing the game I felt really uneasy. Especially when all the bizarre stuff went down, like losing sanity in the Bedroom, and the eyes appearing in the Living Room. The entire environment was also amazing! It wasn't just some plain things mushed together, the environments actually resembled a proper place. It looked so well made, alongside the atmosphere. The stuff you get in the Extras is also cool to look at. Looking at the behind the scenes and the challenges is always something I look forward to seeing in a fan game if they have it. And the fact that SM released only about a year or so after Reborn is shocking. TJoC improved drastically in only a span of a year. It's obvious a lot of work went into SM, far more than any of the other games. SM is an outstanding fan game, and should be played if you haven't already. Now that all the praising for this fan game is out of the way, I can begin talking about the games flaws. I'll start with this first, I don't like the threats in the game. I really don't like them. Mainly all the Ignited. Basically I hate the Ignited. I mean, I have a valid reason for not liking them. It's not that their a pain to deal with, their difficulty isn't the problem. I hate their design. I'm about to rant a bit here, so get ready. When they were first created for The Joy of Creation back in 2015, it made sense. There wasn't many accurate models, so people had to use what they could. Why they had parts of them missing though in that game I'm not entirely sure. I think it was explained but I don't really remember. Then Reborn came into the light. The same crew were being used again, with a new texture on them. Same model, same parts missing from them. I questioned it a bit but didn't really think much of it. I figured since it was just a demo of sorts for the game and not the actual full game, they were just place holders. Then Story Mode released. They were still the same. Look, I don't have anything wrong with the models of the Withereds EA made. They're talented and did a good job making them. My problem with the Ignited is how it seemed not much effort was even put into them besides their texture. Nikson simply removed parts of them and gave them a burnt looking texture. The texture that are on the Ignited doesn't even look like they were fully burnt. It was like they were grazed partially by a fire. A graze from a fire wouldn't cause any real harm to a person. I'll admit the texture on a few of them does look really nice. Mainly Ignited Freddy and Ignited G. Freddy. Then there's the fact they aren't scary in the slightest, or unsettling. Yeah, that's pretty much the case for most threats in a fan game, including FNaF. But there have been a few times when people managed to pull off the ability to make their creatures horrifying. Those people didn't even need to make them do anything. They could just make them stand in a single position and I'd feel uncomfortable looking at them. An example off the top of my head would be Emil Macko with his Monster crew. Those things are vile. While the animation for the Ignited in SM is well done, they still don't strike any type of fear into me. Though I don't think Nikson was trying to make them scary or anything. When they were first made, they were just more damaged versions of the Withereds. And since these demons take on the forms of people's creations, it makes sense why they'd just be Freddy and crew but more damaged. Still, they could have been a lot better. They could have been their own models. If not new models, they should have had their own withering to them instead of missing limbs and suit parts. If a texture wasn't made for them, I'd say no effort was put into them. I think why I dislike them is because so much more could have been done for them. They could have become something truly horrifying, but are stuck as poorly damaged characters most people can make. I'll admit, I'm impressed they've become so iconic for such basic designs. Alright, rant is over. The other threats included in the game are much better than the Ignited. As far as I know, The Fallen were models made for TJoC. That alone makes me like them. The idea around them is also rather cool. They're just like the Ignited, but they came out more distorted then them. They're endoskeletons that looked like they were thrown against a wall repeatedly. It's interesting to think about I guess. Then there's Creation who's a hybrid of all the Ignited but G. Freddy. For a final boss character they're actually cool to look at. They aren't scary or intimidating, they just look neat. The game does lose all aspects of it being scary or stressful after your third time playing it. You know how everything will go down, and when jump scares will appear. It just turns into something fun to play in the end. Though the challenges do fix that as they are really hard to do. Course, you can end up getting really pissed off at them. What really sucks is there is no reward for doing the challenges. You don't get anything other than the satisfaction you beat them. I suppose that's enough for some people. Anyway, losing the scare factor is something that always happens in most horror games that I hate. In conclusion, The Joy of Creation: Story Mode is an incredibly well made game that is definitely worth your time to play. Although it has an original story barely any other fan game has, the game does focus more on game play. So if you don't care much about story and just want something to play, this game is for you.

Alright TL;DR people, here's your little summary. TJoC 2015 is a dull game that gets boring fairly quickly. It has very good jump scares though that are rarely seen in fan games. TJoC Reborn is an excellent way to waste time by watching an AI wander around. It's also a challenging experience if you aren't quick in it. TJoC HE isn't a good game. It could have been better but is just FNaF 3 with free roam and a bigger layout with no Phantoms and a single goal you need to get done. TJOC: SM is an outstanding fan game that you must play if you have not already. It focuses more on game play than story however. It'll scare you when you first play, but afterwards loses that scare factor. Full to the brim with amazing game play, you're going to have fun playing it.
And that concludes the first review in this series. Let me know your personal thoughts on TJoC as a whole and this series I suppose. I'm curious to see what you guys think of it. And next time, I'll be talking about another very popular fan game that is in a way the opposite of TJoC: SM, since it focuses a lot on the story, when it should have focused on the scares too.
