Nvidia Game Ready drivers are only available after registration with new GeForce Experience BETA update; Still available via Geforce.com and non-beta version for now
Starting with the BETA update to GFE 2.8.0 I am no longer able to download Game Ready Drivers through GFE unless I sign up for an account.
Nvida had said back in october that they plan to only release quarterly updates and bug fixes to the main driver available through windows update and Nvidia.com, only serving the Game Ready drivers to people who register with their service through GFE.
Keep in mind that this is a beta version, but this is how it's going to look sometime in December when this gets pushed to the main channel. You will then only be able to download Game Ready drivers, that are optimized for new and upcoming games, if you register for a GFE account and have the software installed.
To be absolutely fair, even if you don't get the GR drivers, you will still receive bug fixes and updates regularly through normal windows update and people who don't play games don't need driver updates for every single game anyway. But locking away driver updates behind a registration and behind GFE is really annoying. I personally use GFE anyway, but I can absolutely see why many people wouldn't want the software installed and see it as bloatware.
I have to say, creating an Nvidia account isn't even the big deal here, but forcing the GFE software on gamers absolutely is. It's another one in a long series of problems/annoyances with Nvidia drivers (many issues never get fixed, Nvidia seems to be putting all their effort into new GFE features instead of fixing serious issues with Nvidia surround for example, though I don't know if that's the same team).
As I use Geforce Exprience for recording anyway, this will be just a minor inconvenience to me and I will just register an account. But for people who don't want to install software that they don't use, I imagine this will be an issue.
