Remington Model 34 Serial Number
LSB#: 180620VS06
Make: Remington
Model: 34
Serial Number: 83309
Year of Manufacture: 1934 (XC date code)
Caliber: .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle
Action Type: Bolt Action with Tubular Magazine
Markings: The top of the barrel is marked 'REMINGTON ARMS CO. INC., ILION, N.Y. MADE IN USA', '-MODEL 34' and with patent numbers. The left of the receiver is marked 'Remington / REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.', '.22 SHORT, LONG / OR LONG RIFLE', 'U' and 'XC' date code. The chamber ring is marked with the serial number.
Barrel Length: 24”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a 'V'-notch leaf and elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. There is no provision for mounting another sight/optic.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece smooth walnut with finger grooves on the forend, semi-pistol grip, straight comb and flat steel buttplate. The stock has scattered light compressions, drag lines and bruises with a few small repaired losses at the bottom-right of the forend toward the front. There also appears to be a long repaired crack along the bottom-center at the mounting screw. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has scattered light wear and light marks with a mottled finish, in about Good-Very Good condition. The stock rates in about Good-plus overall condition as repaired.
Type of Finish: Blue w/ Chrome Plated Trigger
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 25% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. The remaining finish is mottled with light patina throughout the barrel and receiver which have some scattered light marks and dings. The magazine tube also has some finish remaining, though it shows more wear and patina than the barrel and receiver. The trigger guard is mostly worn to white with a little bit of finish remaining toward the rear. The screw heads are tool marked with useable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition as missing the bolt.
Mechanics: The bolt is missing, preventing us testing whether the action functions correctly. There is nothing to suggest that it will not function correctly with a new bolt. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: The model 34 was Remington's first repeating bolt-action .22 rifle and appears to be much the same as other such rifles of the day. However, on closer inspection, one will see the unique lifter design which presents the nose of the bullet directly to the chamber so that it does not contact the chamber mouth on insertion, preventing deformation which may affect accuracy. The price of the rifle was high compared to others of its day and this likely contributed to the relatively short production period of about four years. This example is in good mechanical shape but for the missing bolt, and the stock is in about Good shape but has seen some repairs. If you can find a replacement bolt, this ought to make a fine shooter as the model 34s were well respected for their accuracy. Please see our photos and good luck!
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This C&R eligible rifle can be transferred in California.
