It’s been almost two days since Microsoft started pushing out Windows 10 to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PC users who reserved their free upgrade to Windows 10. Users who haven’t reserved their free upgrade can use the official Windows 10 Media Creation Tool to upgrade to Windows 10 immediately.

Step 1: On Windows 10, click the Start button and then click or tap Settings app icon on the left-side of the Start menu to open the same.

Alternatively, you can quickly open the Settings app using Windows + I keyboard shortcut.

Step 2: Once the Settings app is launched, click or tap the last category titled Update and security (Windows Update, recovery, backup).

Step 3: On the left-pane, click Activation.

Step 3: Now, on the right-side, you can see your edition of Windows 10 and the activation status of your Windows 10.

If your Windows 10 is activated, Windows is activated will appear right next to Activation.

Another way to check if your Windows 10 is activated

Step 1: Open System window using Windows + Pause/Break keyboard shortcut.

Or, open File Explorer (Windows Explorer), in the left-pane, right-click on This PC icon and then click Properties option to open the same.

Step 2: Here, scroll down to see Windows Activation section.

Step 3: If your copy of Windows 10 is activated, you will see Windows is activated message.

This will download the 17.5MB MediaCreationTool.exe file to your system. Click on it to start upgrading your Windows 10.

During the upgrade process, your PC will restart several times, and you don’t need to do anything really.

You will be asked to accept the licensing terms. Accept them.

The downloading will start.

Once done, the integrity of the downloaded file will be verified.

Once the download is verified, the Windows 10 media will be created.

You will next see the following screen.

The tool will check if any new updates are available and download them, if they are.

Minor housekeeping will be done.

You will need to again accept the license terms.

The tool will again check for updates.

It will next check if your system is ready to install.

Disk Space availability is also checked.

Once all is set, you will have to select Install. Your personal files and apps will be kept.

The installation process will start.

Your PC will restart a couple of times.

Soon you will see a welcome screen.

If you do not want to connect to the Internet you may skip this step.

Select the Privacy settings or go with the defaults. You can always change them later on.

That’s it! Click on Next, and you will see the following screen signifying that the upgrade is over successfully.
