Front and back images[edit]

How do you get the front/back images in the gallery? I want to upload a skin, but dont have the other pics. http://www.minecraft.net/skin/skin.jsp?user=melzardust --Melzardust 09:39, 11 November 2010 (CST)

I second this. I believe I brought this up on the Skins_(gallery) page about screenshots of the skin, but I don't recall finding an answer. However the new shots were made is highly effective at visualizing skins and I for one would love to find out how. Oh, and nice skin, Melzardust. Very unique. Jaeil 10:12, 11 November 2010 (CST)
I just render them in blender. –ultradude25(T|C) at 04:04, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the compliment =P Melzardust 12:35, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm a noob, and expect to be treated as such, but I created a Hello Kitty skin for my gf and would love to give it to the site (I use it so much I feel I owe you guys, but I'm too dead broke to drop a donation). Should I just download Blender, take the pics, and upload them to the page? You can see it at https://sites.google.com/site/cronolexus/random-downloads . –The preceding unsigned comment was added by Cronolexus(Talk|Contribs) 03:53, 26 January 2011. Ahaha, that's really cute. Don't worry, we don't bite. Not much anyway. If you're able to render them like User:Ultradude25 has, then I guess you can stick it on the list (not sure if they're welcoming anymore entries). Also, if you feel you owe the wiki, perhaps you can make other contributions around various articles, like fixing any spelling or grammar or finding references for any 'citation needed' tags! That'd be pretty cool :D --Gnu32 06:35, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Uploading skins?[edit]

I tried uploading my new skin on the minecraft site, but the page just acts like its loading, then stops and clears the file address bar. This happens even when I try uploading the default 'char.png' file. Is this feature of the site down? --VOR-D09 08:38, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

  • Can the front/back renderings be done in Wings 3D? Blender won't run on my Windows 7 PC for reasons unknown. --VOR-D09 21:17, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
  • Does anyone know why this happened? I created a new skin using Photoshop (I made sure it was saved as a PNG) and tried to upload it to the Minecraft site to use on my player, but it says 'Something seems to have gone wrong. We'll have a tinker with it momentarily, please check back again later.' I've let it sit for awhile, and it still says that. Anyone know why? --Samness7 05:40, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
  • I've had this problem too. I think it started when they redesigned the site. So now, here I am, stuck as Gordon Freeman. captainsid2001 (a.k.a. freeman2001) 22:37, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Remove Gallery[edit]

I think we should remove the gallery, if someone wants examples we can put a few of those, but not this huge list! MoonBeans (u-t-c) 13:22, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Agreed, or maybe move it to [[Skin/Gallery]] or something. It doesn't really help the article when there's 50,000 skins on the page. Ordona 17:48, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
I Agree with MoonBeans, a few examples are fine, but this page is too much. Qcdynamics 23:48, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
The gallery is unprofessional and doesn't contribute to the article in any way. It should be moved asap. Legoless 14:52, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
I think there should just be a another page with the gallery, but not have it on the skins page. Jtlcr777 14:56, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
Seeing as how moving the gallery appears to be the clear consensus, I've done so. It is now located at the recommended [[Skin/Gallery]] article. --Legoless 13:33, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
I vote to remove the gallery all together. Almost all of those skins are ugly. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by TQuin(Talk|Contribs) 13:30, 1 February 2012‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Missing accessory?[edit]

Ive created a skin for my character that uses the head accessory area, but that part is missing when I use the skin. Is there something I have to do to get it to work, or what? — 20:04, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

If you're filling the entire hat area with pixels, it won't work. All you gotta do is make one of the pixels transparent and the rest will appear. Preferably one of the pixels on the bottom side, so it doesn't make a noticeable difference. Dunny 07:53, 7 May 2011 (UTC)
Actually the skin has only a few pixels on the accessory area, the rest is transparent. — 18:15, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm having this problem as well...wonder if skins are just buggy right now or something.--Spirallingshape 02:22, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
Beats me, I modified another skin that used the accessory area used as well and it works this time, so IDN if it was just how I did the previous skin or what. It showed up on the website I uploaded the skin to, it has a built-in skin editor with a live character model preview box, and it was working fine. — 15:13, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
If you made your skin in microsoft paint, than the accessories will not appear but the rest will. Use a program like Photoshop, or pixlr.com to edit in instead.Gmansoliver 17:24, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
Gman is right. I had this problem when using paint. CommanderZapp (talk)

New Cloak[edit]

Can someone please add this to the article? http://twitter.com/#!/notch/status/60980770084364288Drenay 12:48, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Seconded. belongs to Danny Baranowsky, and was given for... god knows why. Something about genitalia or something. Animalbrad 16:34, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

I know why he got it. Yes he was sexting with notch, and notch promised the cape in return for leaving him alone.

Also, why is the page locked in the first place? Isn't anyone paying attention to this?Drenay 00:54, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Page was locked because before they were posting minecraft skins here, and they don't want them there anymore I believe. — 18:56, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
No, the page was locked because people were posting fansites on the page. Somebody500 (有人500) 15:49, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Concerning ' transparency is not allowed on the skin file except on the second head area, which is transparent by default'[edit]

This is most certainly not true. I've tried editing char.png (the skin file) to have no arms and creeper legs (basically a creeper). It worked. When I saw other people with the default skin they looked exactly like a creeper, and when I pressed the inventory button I looked like a creeper to. This shows that it is not only the second head area that can be transparent. Vincent2128 15:30, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

I think that the entire body can be transparent, cause I've seen floating head skins quite often. What I'm wondering is why the transparent head area on my skin doesn't work =/ — 18:58, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Animated Skins?[edit]

I've been thinking, and would like to request testing on animated skins. What I mean by this is that I want someone to find a way to make animated skins that actually work. I would assume that a .gif file would work for this, at least for Macs, but I'm not so sure about Windows and Linux or whatnot. Pikman01 15:50, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Not so sure that would work. I think MineCraft would have had to have code specifically for the purpose, and besides, aren't MineCraft skins PNG files? Pitzik4 03:35, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
I'm sure that won't work. If the code says 'use(char.png)' it certainly won't accept char.gif. On the other hand, I remember seeing an animated JPG image. Besides, changing extension from gif to png may work. By the way, why won't YOU find that way? I think the Google works the same for us all... MaxKing 22:01, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
There is no such thing as 'animated JPG'. It's likely was a GIF image with it's extension changed. Changing extension from gif to png will not work because image viewers usually tries every supported format if attempt to open file with algorithm corresponding to file extension failed. If game don't support any image types aside from Portable Network Graphics, it won't work. — MiiNiPaaT|C 12:16, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
I bet you meant animated PNG. they are rare, but exist...--TakeruDavis 04:01, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
I'd like to say that Minecraft can use ordinary .png images to animate personalised water, lava, portals and fire. I've made a few animated texturepacks using .png images to give them a better look. I dont know if minecraft uses this method to animate the default animations, but it's used to make personalised ones. They are made by having 32 slightly different images in a vertical line, each just slightly different from the one above, for example: [[:File:Animated_Fire.png]]. I use this to make the water, lava, portals and fire but the thing is you need a patch to make these animated versions visable, meaning minecraft can't use it on its own. So even if you figured the method of stacking a minecraft skin the right way, you'd run into the problem of minecraft not even being able to use your skin. Even if you found a perfect patch to make the skin visable, you'd be fine on your own but noone else will have it so if you wanted to show it off to friends on a server, it would look like the default skin so would it even be worth the trouble? Hope you didn't get bored reading all that... Frogundergrove 06:42, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
I know this discussion hasn't been edited in years, but I have seen animated mobs in texturepacks as of 1.5.2, with blinking cows, rippling creepers, and burning ghasts. User:Meeples10Talk

Yeah, a few days ago my brother was talking about a cool skin with a rubik's cube head. Yesterday, I was looking at the various capes and I looked at the Mojang employees cape and, until we remembered that the back of Notch's head is blank, we thought that, to preserve Notch's identity, they bleeped out his face. My brother and I were like, 'You can tell it's Notch! Why bleep out his face if you can tell who it is anyway?'--Mindofthelion (talk) 16:28, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Skin URL[edit]

Deadmau5 ears[edit]

On the standard skin texture color thingy, you can customize it so that it gives you deadmau5 ears(to an extent. To give yourself the ears, you have to change the source code to read your name instead of deadmau5's ears. Its purely clientside). Anyways, I think that the texturemap (skinmap?) for the skins should include the section for the ears. Thoughts?I can upload the texturemap including the section for the ears, if needed 65.7.181.151 00:50, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Xmas 2011 Cloak[edit]

In the article it says:

It is unknown if the Christmas/New Year capes will be given out yearly, however they were not given out for Christmas of 2011.

But we have an image of a so-called Christmas 2011 cape. I don't recall seeing any capes on Christmas personally. Ordona 21:50, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Using Skins[edit]

I used WinRAR to open minecraft.jar and deleted the default character look (char.png) and put my Roxas skin but when I started playing, my character was completely blank. Why did this happen? Bluelucario24 09:10, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

um, you forgot to upload. uploading changes the skin so that you can show it off. so goto minecraft.net, click 'profile', click 'Change file', then click upload. sorted! now go onto minecraft and see if you have a blank skin anymore.--Crazytobuild 05:41, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Xbox 360 Custom Skins[edit]

I saw in a YouTube video that 4J said [or Tweeted rather] they're working on getting user-made skins to the Xbox Edition, but due to legal issues and what 'gets lawyers excited,' it will be quite a while before Xbox users get it, or as 4J Tweeted 'possibly much later.' --24.145.54.216 18:33, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

External links removed[edit]

Heyho. I don't really agree with the following changes:http://www.minecraftwiki.net/index.php?title=Skin&diff=prev&oldid=455637

I had some users asking me about cape and skin directories and I sent them to the wiki page finding out that they no longer can find any of the needed information :-/ So I came here to check where it was gone and found the changes linked above. Those links were not against any rule that I could find. And those were not any 'communities' or something, but useful external references which many users can no longer find.

Undoing the change is not possible for me, so I'd be glad if someone could help here to fix this again?!

info about changing the steve.png (specifically where it's located) is out of date EDIT: also minecraft no longer allows steve.png to be changed[edit]

info about changing the steve.png (specifically where it's located) is out of date. There is no file called 'minecraft.jar' in minecraft anymore. Instead the version number replaces the word 'minecraft' now that we're able to pick from a few different versions in the launcher. Also I've changed the 'steve.png' in it (making sure the filename of the replacement is the same) and it's never worked for me. 24.68.154.229 03:13, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Edit: just tried again, and after the change I re-opened the jar in winrar and re-examined the steve.png file. It WAS changed. However running the program seems to have changed it back during the launcher's quick loading sequence. Re-examining it AGAIN after running minecraft for a few seconds (actually went into a map and played for 5 seconds) reveals that the file has changed back to the default. So apparently no, you can't edit the steve.png anymore. 24.68.154.229 03:23, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
It is still possible, but the game automatically syncs your minecraft version with the official. To change the skin without resource packs you must change the version name from 1.7.4, basically like a mod. KnightMiner (talk) 17:34, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Unique Skin Calculation[edit]

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. I think it's closer to 3x1023581

97.65.115.12 00:35, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

The page is correct. Since the skin file is 64x64 pixels, and with 256 values per color component for each pixel, there's no possible way to have more than about 69 billion different skins. Some of the pixels are not used, so the actual number is somewhat lower. -- Orthotopetalk 01:14, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
I agree with Orthotope. If you want numbers I found, there are 3,264 different pixels out of the 4,096 pixels of the skin used (for the larger 1.8 skin). That times 16,777,216 (2563) for the three bands of color. All arrives at 54,760,833,024. Of course, many of these colors appear the same to the eye, so even less unique skins can be made.
--KnightMiner(talk|contribs) 03:27, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
Okay, let's do the math. If you count carefully, there are 1,184 (1,632 if 1.8) solid pixels and 384 (1,632 if 1.8) overlay pixels in one Minecraft skin. Each solid pixels can have 2563 = 16,777,216 different colors and each overlay pixels can have 16,777,217 different colors (+1 completely transparent color). You have to mind that calculating every possible skins that have n pixels is the same as calculating every possible numbers with n digits. So it's done by powering, not multiplying (26 billions are just a number of unique skins that have all pixels except one are black!)
If my calculations are right, Minecraft 1.7 or below can have 16,777,2161,184 × 16,777,217384 ≈ 2.29×1011,328 unique Minecraft skins and Minecraft 1.8 or above can have 16,777,2161,632 × 16,777,2171,632 ≈ 3.06×1023,581 unique Minecraft skins (You are right, 97.65.115.12).
Note: I calculated by using ab = c×10d ; d = ⌊(log a) × b⌋ , c = 10(log a) × b - d equation.

Actually, that makes a lot of sense. The only problem is my calculator overloads when attempting to calculate that equation. Can you attempt to get a equal number, instead of about equal to? --KnightMiner(talk|contribs) 15:20, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
None of this is correct. The number of color combinations is 255^3 not 256^3---- that makes a significant difference 162.229.197.206 00:30, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

how to get capes.[edit]

Two things. One, if you get a redemption code for a cape can it be used twice by different users? Second, does one actually have to go to Minecon to get the cape or will just purchasing the ticket be enough? Brickticks (talk) 19:42, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

  1. You can only use it for one user.
  2. Based on the minecon, the redemption code may be emailed to those who purchased tickets, or they give you a card with a redemption code upon attending.

Minecraft 1.8 skin url[edit]

Minecraft 1.8 skins don't seem to be uploaded to the same location (http://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftSkins/username.png). Does a place for 1.8 skins exist like this? If not how can I load a skin file with the new format into PHP?

Villermen (talk) 19:29, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, I've noticed this too... It's broken all the online skin finders. --Squawkers13 (talk) 23:16, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
Looks like it now uses http://skins.minecraft.net/MinecraftSkins/username.png, which redirects to http://textures.minecraft.net/texture/UUID. -- Orthotopetalk 00:10, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

PS3 Skins Listing[edit]

I noticed that at the moment only the 360 version has it's DLC skins listed. Should we create a section that lists the PS3 DLC skins? 69.122.63.147 04:27, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

It would be helpful to note. Although I would vote for moving all the skin packs to a separate article, such as Skin pack --KnightMiner(t|c) 14:43, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Split skin packs into a separate page[edit]

I noticed there are not only many skin packs, but many are missing, and it will likely affect article readability in the near future because of the shear number of them. I suggest we split the skin pack listing into a new page Skin packs, and then briefly describe it here with a link to that page. --KnightMiner(t|c) 19:46, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

I'm happy for this to happen if others are! :)
One suggestion... how about [[Console Edition/Skin packs]], since the packs in question only apply to the console formats?
— EthanCentaurai · 19:59, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
Nesting version exclusive features under the edition page would just get messy, and this wiki's goal is to describe all editions (needs a bit of work, but it might get there) it would just be anti-productive. Also, version exclusive pages such are the reason we have {{t|console}} and alike. --KnightMiner(t|c) 20:10, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
I agree with splitting off the skin packs (and gallery, which is all related content); perhaps to a subpage such as Skin/Skin packs. -- Orthotopetalk 20:39, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
I agree also, as most of the skin page is about PC skins. --Squawkers13 (talk) 23:16, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Doctor Who Skin Packs[edit]

Information on the Doctor Who Skin Pack has been eluding me. I was able to find an article at Xbox.com officially saying that there would be one, and an article claiming to have more pictures and a release date (Article)But I'm not sure what to believe, as there is no official release info?(And they haven't mentioned the ps3/ps4...)--Squawkers13 (talk) 23:30, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Info box for skin packs[edit]

Someone should put info boxes listing the skins in the skin packs and a skin file for them that is in the format of the skin file in the jar file for minecraft (just in case someone wants to use the for PE or PC). 98.114.223.241 13:22, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

The info box should look like the infobox showing the default skins for minecraft Xbox edition. 98.114.223.241 13:27, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Split capes[edit]

Should capes be split off into its own separate page? Capes are very different to skins (which is what makes up the rest of the content). GoandgooTalk

I agree capes are a much different topic, as they cannot be made by players and their history/display is much different. The only real similarities are they both can be adjusted on the profile and they both customize appearance without game play content. KnightMiner(t|c) 01:16, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Pocket Editon Skins[edit]

In this article, it says that in Pocket Edition the skins are changeable, however according to Mojang's Help Site there is no way to change skins in that version. [1]Dystyyy (talk) 07:27, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

That help page currently says it was last updated on September 26, 2014; skins were added to PE about two weeks ago. — Orthotopetalk 07:39, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Default skin pack[edit]

Can someone upload the Alex variations to the default skin pack section? - MinecraftPhotos4U (talk) 14:43, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
